Many people contact us after receiving a legal demand, being served with a lawsuit, or realizing that a problem they ignored has grown into a real legal threat. We assess the situation honestly, explain the options available, and help you decide whether to negotiate, send a demand, or take the matter to court. We do not push litigation when it is not in a client's interest.

We practice regularly in Fremont County District Court, Pueblo County District Court, and other Colorado courts. Knowing the local rules, procedures, and judicial expectations matters when evaluating whether to settle or litigate. We draw on that practical knowledge when advising clients on their options.

When should I hire an attorney for a civil dispute in Colorado?

If you have received a formal demand letter, been served with a lawsuit, or are owed money that someone refuses to pay, involving an attorney early almost always improves your outcome. Pre-litigation resolution through negotiation is often possible and far less expensive than court. Waiting until a deadline is imminent limits your options significantly.

What is the statute of limitations for civil claims in Colorado?

Statutes of limitations vary by claim type and it is important that you consult an attorney as to your special legal facts and do not rely upon the general information found on the internet for determining statutes of limitations. In general, contract claims carry a three-year limitation period. Personal injury claims are generally two years from the date of injury. Assault, battery, libel, and slander often must be brought within one year. Claims against government entities may have significantly shorter notice and filing deadlines. If you believe you have a claim, contact us promptly so we can evaluate whether time is a factor.

Can I handle a civil case myself in Colorado small claims court?

Colorado small claims court handles disputes up to $7,500 and is designed to be accessible without an attorney. However, if you are a defendant in small claims, or if the other side has legal representation, consulting with an attorney before your hearing can meaningfully improve your outcome. We offer small claims consulting to help clients understand the process and prepare their case.
